Mary Keady (abt 1870-1937)

Mary Keady was born sometime between 1870-1873 in Ireland according to the US censuses for 1900-1930. 

Most of these records have her birth year as 1870 so I will use that one as the default until I find something with more direct evidence. 

As for most of the immigrant ancestors I have searched for, I have so far been unable to pin down when and where they left and when and where they arrived.

The 1900 census states that her year of immigration was 1888 and that she had been in the country for 12 years.

The 1910 census, the columns for immigration/naturalization for her name were left blank.

The 1920 census has her immigration year as 1886 and date of naturalization as 1891.

The 1930 census lists her immigration year as 1875 and only states that she is naturalized.

Finally, 1905 she shows up on a passenger list sailing aboard the S.S. Teutonic from Queenstown on 12 October 1905 and arrived at the Port of New York on 19 October 1905. One of the columns asked if they have ever been in the United States before and when and where. For Mary it has 18 years in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It also says that she will be joining her sister Kate Curley on Merrimack Street in Pittsburgh which matches other records for Mary Keady.

Since most of the records indicate that she immigrated in the late 1880s that is where I have focused my search so far. Mary Keady is a fairly common name and I have found a number of possibilities, but so far nothing to indicate one of them is the one I am looking for. Unfortunately, as with the other immigrant ancestors I have researched, I can’t seem to find them arriving or leaving their country of origin. They all just seem to appear in the US as if by magic. Just another reason for me to take a road trip to Pennsylvania to search for some answers.

Trying to find immigration records for Dennis McFadden (1847-1924)

 Dennis McFadden first appeared in the US in the 1860 US census in Clinton, Vinton County, Ohio.[1] According to the census, Dennis (16) lived with his parents Edward and Alice (both 56) and his brother John (18). I don’t know if they arrived at the same time or staggered their immigration but by 1860 they were all in Ohio.

  The 1900[2] and 1920[3] US census has Dennis’ year of immigrated as 1850. Both records indicate he was naturalized and the 1920 census has the date of naturalization as 1865. The 1910[4] US Census had the date as 1848 and his naturalization date as 1865.

On 10 April 1919 Edward Vincent McFadden son of Dennis in his passport application stated that Dennis immigrated on or about 1852 and that he sailed from the Port of Londonderry, Ireland.[5] The passport also states that there are “no naturalization papers, but a discharge from U.S. Army dated July 25, 1865.”

I have the service record[6] and pension applications for both Dennis[7] and John[8] but unfortunately none mention anything about their immigration or naturalization in the US. 

I checked Irish Passenger Lists, 1847-1871[9] and the Pennsylvania, Passenger and Crew Lists, 1800-1962[10] on Ancestry.com and while they have several Dennis, Edward and John McFadden’s listed I cannot tell if any are the ones I am looking for. 

I was hoping that at least one of the four names (Edward, Alice, John and Dennis) might have turned up in the immigration record. I have been focused on Philadelphia as the port of arrival since they ended up in Ohio by 1860. Emigration documentation is spotty for Ireland before 1890, I'll focus my sights on other possible ports of arrival for now.

52 Ancestors- Week 13-Edward McFadden

Blogger Amy Johnson Crow has created a challenge, 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks. Each week the object is to post about a specific ancestor.

I have been bad about posting lately, but hopefully can get going on this again.

Also, apparently I skipped #13.

 

Edward McFadden (?-?)

Edward McFadden is the father of my maternal great grandfather Dennis Cornelius McFadden.  His wife was Alice Collum and both are believed to have been born in Ireland.

This is pretty much all that is known about Edward. 

There are two family legends concerning Edward and the McFadden family and how they came to America. 

One story has it that Edward died during the potato famine in Ireland.  Alice was no longer able to care for the children, so Dennis and his brother John walked to one of the Irish ports and sailed for America.  After arriving they settled in Ohio with a sister who possibly married a Ferry.

The second story indicates that Edward and Alice at some point immigrated to America and settled in Ohio.  It is unknown if Dennis and John came with their parents or if family members came over at different times.

Possible candidates for Edward and Alice McFadden show up in the 1860 US Census for Clinton, Vinton County, Ohio.  So far, I have been unable to prove or disprove if this is the correct family.

Edward and Alice are next mentioned on Application and Statement for Marriage License for Dennis and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Neuland in 1886.

The parents of Dennis are not named but are listed as "residents of the State of Ohio"

In 1919 Edward Vincent McFadden (1889-1977) a son of Dennis and Elizabeth applied for a passport to travel to Europe after World War I.  In it, he lists the places his father had lived up to that point. It also says that he immigrated to the US in 1852.

States Dennis had live in the US for 67 uninterrupted years at "Coal Center, Roscoe, Monongahela & Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania).   Also lived in State of Ohio."

Finally, the death certificate for Dennis, names his parents as Edward McFadden and Alice Collum.  Both are also said to have been born in Ireland.  The informant was Cornelius McFadden (1903-1977), ninth child of Dennis and Elizabeth.

So far, I have been unable to locate any possible candidates Edward, Alice or Dennis in the immigration records. I'm hoping if I can focus on Ohio, something may turn up.

Ireland Reaching Out

This seems like a very cool idea and I hope it catches on.

My maternal great grandfather, Dennis McFadden, was from Tullaghobely, Co. Donegal.  I haven't been able to find exactly when he came over or with which family members, but perhaps this project can help me get closer to figuring it out.

Also, it makes me want to plan my bicycling tour/genealogy trip to Ireland very soon.
